What to do if your infant gets a sunburn

Hello Readers,

If you read my blog you know that a couple of weeks ago we were in Sunny Florida. Of course being that it was the first time we were there my 7 month old ended up getting a sunburn on his face. It got pretty red and eventually the nose blistered up. Needless to say we felt horrible but I have a few solutions that could help you out if this ever happened to you. Make sure that you stock up on these things BEFORE you head out on your trip to s sunny destination.

1- Use Aloe Vera AS SOON as the redness appears. This will help cool the skin and hopefully prevent any blistering. These are two of my favorites Bobo Botanicals or Banana Boat

2- Another way to help prevent blistering is to put cold compresses with a towel or use cold compress mask

3- If blistering does occur continue using the aloe vera and also a cream such as aquaphor or A &D. you can also use cortisone as long as the affected area is not near your child's face or eyes. Also if you are still nursing your child you can use a little breast milk to help with the sunburn. It may get a little messy but it has medicinal properties.

4- One the bluster starts crusting up do not put anything else on it. Leave it dry. This actually accelerates healing and the scab will start falling off by itself.

5- Finally to prevent sunburn in the first place make sure you lather up your kids with sunscreen every hour. From this experience I learned to use this sun screen sticks. They are from Banana Boat and can make putting lotion on the face super easy and not messy.Coppertone Kids is my favorite lotion to use. However Coppertone Kids has an amazing line of products out there. Check them out.

6- Also to cover up my son while he was swimming I bought this awesome pool floating device from Amazon.com. This floating device comes with a canopy that provides extra protection from the sun, It is the Swimways Baby Spring Float Activity Center with Canopy.

7- Finally, make sure that your baby is using bathing suits and rash guard shirts, they provide some extra protection from the sun. Bathing suits and rash guards

Hopefully if you learn from my experience and follow these tips your children won't get sunburn and you can enjoy your vacation! If your child does get sunburn you will be happy you have all of these supplies on hand.

Comparative Essay Assignment for Teachers

Hello Blog Readers!

As many of you know I am a teacher. I came up with this Amazing lesson to compare a novel and an amazing movie. I am choosing to post it on the blog because I sometimes like to share my lessons that work well instead of charging for them.

My students read the novel "Warriors Don't Cry" which tells the story of the Little Rock Nine. But you can have your students read something similar.

Then I have them watch Remember the Titans. I love this movie because it teaches so many lessons and its a Disney Movie. I LOVE anything DISNEY.

You can show Remember the Titans in your classroom by purchasing it from Amazon.com or Ebay.
Click either of these two links to purchase it:  Remember the Titans or Ebay Movies

Once you have your two items that you will compare here is the essay prompt you can give your students. You can basically use this prompt with any book you read and this movie as this movie has a lot of lessons.

In a well thought out essay compare and contrast the Football team in “Remember the Titans” to the Little Rock Nine. Write about the problems they had? What prejudices they faced? Use character comparisons and contrasts for example, Melba and Julius, Link and Gary, and Coach Boone and Civil Rights Leaders. Spelling and correct grammatical usage will count.

You can use these common core standards, although I am sure that any other standards would apply.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1
Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.3
Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.

·         CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.8.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

·

Knowledge of Language

·         CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.8.3 Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

How to Save Money on Disney Vacations and Universal Studios Vacations

When we think of Disney Vacations We think EXPENSIVE!! But it definitely doesn't have to be

Well, It doesn't have to be.

There are many ways to save money.

First off lets find a place to stay.

1- Stay at a Disney Value Resort- They are cheap and since you are only using it to sleep who cares! They offer free shuttles to the park

*note if you stay at a Disney resort you can still visit Universal Studios by taking a short cab ride which will cost you about $20

2- Stay at Downtown Disney- I have stayed at the Buena Vista Palace in Downtown Disney and have paid only $90/night- Super cheap if you ask me. These hotels offer almost all benefits of a disney resort (Including Shuttles to the parks) for less than half of the price.

3- There are Many many many hotels offsite and for low prices, just do your research on website like booking.com or trip advisor and you can find great deals.

4- You can stay at a hotel closer to Universal Studios- a cab ride to Disney will cost you about $20 as well- One hotel I have stayed it the Doubletree hotel at the Entrance to Universal, it cost me about $101/night and there is pretty good service here. The hotel is a little dated but you can't beat it for the price.

** Be sure to check out Disney Parks Merchandise and save before you go.

Second- Park Tickets

There are many websites where you can get discount tickets.

two of my favorites are mousesavers.com or undercover tourist. Also check with your job benefits and see if they offer tickets at a discount. For example, I am a teacher so our teachers union offers discounts for park tickets.

Third- Merchandise
For merchandise I would buy stuff before I head to the parks. Head to Amazon.com and stock up on disney shirts and anything else disney. I am sure it is hard to avoid your children wanting merchandise at the park but you can save some money if you buy stuff before hand. Amazon.com also has a full selection of Disney Parks merchandise for a fraction of the cost. You want to make your trip enjoyable not have it break the bank.

Also check out ebay for some great prices on park merchandise

Our Trip to Universal Studio and Islands of Adventure Orlando

We just got back from Orlando and Miami Florida. We are huge Harry Potter freaks! We just HAD to go check out the new Diagon Alley section of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This is something I highly Recommend.

I recommend buying the Park to Park ticket so you can ride the Hogwarts Express train. This is something that should not be missed. Both parks are small and can be done in one day. I also would purchase the Express Pass, that way you do not have to wait in lines for all of the other rides. The only con is that non of the Harry Potter rides take Express Pass (yet)

I recommend you start off at Islands of Adventure and head straight to the Harry Potter Section. Here you have 3 rides to choose from and the Must do Ride is Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. This ride is modeled after the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry. If you are looking to save some money before visiting check out Amazon for your Harry Potter Merchandise

This ride is pretty intense and tons of fun. If you decide to buy a wand at Olivanders you MUST buy an interactive wand as there are markers along the path way where you can perform "spells". Another MUST DO is having a butter beer to drink.

From there you can head to the Jurassaic Park area of the park, followed by Toon Town, Marvel Super Hero Island, Dr. Seuss Land, And Lost continent and finish off with the rest of the park before heading back to the Harry Potter section to ride the Hogwarts Express to the Universal Studios section of the park.

Once you arrive at Universal explore the Diagon Alley section. Be sure to ride Escape from Gringotts, you will not be disappointed
I would then recommend you finish all of Universal, using express pass we were done by 8:00pm.

Unfortunately, we could not ride Spider-Man in Islands of adventure because it was broken down the day we went. One thing is for sure These two parks are not for small children the rides are pretty intense. I would recommend someone be around 6 or 7 years old before they go to Universal Studios.

If you plan on heading to Universal try to get your Harry Potter Merchandise before you leave home and save some money. Click the link to shop Harry Potter Merchandise

Ugh!

There is so much conflicting information about flying with babies that I'm going to post a blog post soon trying to iron it all out.
